Encouraged by our birth doula, by our midwives, and by the sensitive maternity nursing staff where Matthew was born (Mercy Franciscan
Hospital, Mount Airy, Cincinnati), we chose to keep our cherished newborn son with us until the time when
we felt emotionally ready for him to be taken away. This time with our beautiful baby brought us a great deal
of peace and very much helped the grieving process. I, Matthew's mother, held Matthew in my arms during a small naming ceremony that took place in the hospital on June 20, 2003. It was an intimate occasion with Matthew's parents, godmother, maternal grandparents, and four close friends. Before these witnesses, our son was named Matthew Costa Baker.
