Fifth through Eighth Grade....Interesting Class Reading

As I reached harder levels in my grade school experience I began to read more for school than for pleasure.  With mounting homework and sport team schedules I often became too busy to read.  I did however read many unchallenging books such as the Sweet Valley High and College series and when I was younger the Baby Sitters Club, but overall I did not read as many books and read only the ones that had interesting plots as opposed to challenging ideas. Around this time I also started reading thriller novels and came to find reading as something nice to do when my schedule would allow it or when I was really bored.  During this time in school however, I read very good novels that I did not appreciate at the time. A few included Animal Farm, Flowers for Algernon, The Pigman, The Terrorist and The Diary of Anne Frank.   I enjoyed many of these books but did not like taking notes on them and having tests about them. Despite the fact that I did not read as often, I still feel  I read enough to prepare me for High School level reading and found that I was prepared for my English classes when I arrived there.

High School...... From Harry Potter to A Novels Course
In High School, like in the latter part of my grade school years, I read most of the time for school. In high school, I loved the books I read and was intrigued however by analysis of them and it began not to bother me as much to take notes.  I read books ranging from Shakespeare to modern writers to classics such as Huckleberry Finn and Sense and Sensibility.   Later in my high school experience I began to read again for fun. I picked up on the past time I had forgotten existed. Out of school I read all the Harry Potter books, Black like me, The DaVinci Code,  and other Dan Brown books and also read others such as The Five People You Meet in Heaven, and Tuesdays with Morrie

My favorite English class was my senior Novels class.  This class had no tests or quizzes and you were able to read any book you choose as long as you were willing to read a variety of books. In class we read our novels and after each one we would write an essay, a reflection or a paper.  Every so often we would get into a group and discuss our books and compare them with others we had read. I really regained an appreciation for reading after that class and I began to read for fun as opposed to just school related materials. I believe that everyone should have a class like that in high school. A class that gives students a time during the day where the can sit back and read.
Collegiate Reading..... So Far So Good
Having just started college, I have not had the opportunity to read very much, but many of the things I am studying are new to me. An example of this is my philosophy class. We are reading Plato Republic, a book written by the great philosopher Plato. I have never read anything like it. The book is very complex and has shown me a new way to argue things. In conjunction with that, taking this Rhetoric course has not only shown me different forms of argument, but has let me experience new technology in making this web page.  I hope once things slow down a little and I become a better adjusted individual that I will be able to get back to reading for fun.
