AOL Instant Messenger

AOL Instant Messenger is the primary way that I communicate with the majority of my friends.  I is a great way to send simply messages that keep the relationship going when we cannot be together or even just to figure out plans for the night.  Because I use AIM so frequently and it is always used when talking with friends, my diction has become a bit too casual.  Capitalization, complete sentences and spelling go out the window when talking online.  Although this change in grammar is not for the better, AIM does create another easily accessible avenue for communication.

Speech Class

I was formally introduced to spoken rhetoric freshman year in Speech class.  We were assigned different types of speeches to deliver in front of the class.  We explored persuasive and descriptive speeches and also the importance of using visuals to aid our arguments.

Honors English Class

All throughout high school, I was in honors level English courses.  These higher level courses helped me take a more critical look at literature and a more rigorous approach at writing.  I believe that these classes also prepared me for the demand of the work load at the university level.

National Geographics

On my 18th birthday wish list was a subscription for the magazine, National Geographic.  I suppose that this is an unusual wish of a 18 year old but I always loved reading their articles because was so fascinated with all the broad topics they presented.  I still receive the magazine monthly and learn new things about life and history every time I read it.  Instead of filling my mind with gossip from the contents of magazines of People or Star, I enjoy reading National Geographic for its informative material.

Sarge

Sarge, by Scott Stossel, was the last novel that I read the summer before going to college.  It is actually an autobiography on the life of Sargent Shriver, brother-in-law to John F. Kennedy and former director of the Peace Corps.  This was by far the longest book that I have ever read for recreational purposes.  The reason I read the almost 800 page book was because I was interested in the real story on life in the Kennedy family and also the life of such an accomplished man. The patience and perseverance it took to read the whole book was entirely worth it.
