The Invention of the Internet
|
The invention of the internet in 1991 had an immeasurable effect of they way we know communication. Now people had the medium of the internet to present ideas, locate information and communicate across the world. Personally the internet has affected my daily communication and source of information. Every morning I wake up and check my email and the news at chicagotribune.com. Through this avenue, I read more than I would have otherwise getting my information from TV or talking on the phone.

The Titanic Frieze |
The movie Titanic, oddly enough, influenced the history of my literacy. When the movie came out in 1997, I immediately became obsessed. After I saw the movie about five times in the theater, I proceeded to research all I could about the Titanic. I went on the computer, checked books out from the library and even went to the Field Museum in Chicago when they displayed an exhibit on the Titanic. This passion about the subject was the first time that I extensively researched a topic. This research experience would later on help me in other research project.

Spanish Culture Project
|
I underwent my largest research project to date about Spanish Christmas traditions in the Sixth Grade. My teacher was a very tough grader and very particular on details, so I had to be meticulous in my research. Since I did not have access to the internet at that time, I had to do the research the “old-fashioned” way by checking out all my sources at the library. Although this way of researching was more difficult than now when one can go on the internet and have all the information necessary at the touch of a button, this project made me appreciate other tools for research.

Romeo and Juliet |
My sister’s favorite play when she was a freshman in high school Romeo and Juliet. Because I thought my big sister was the coolest person in the world, whatever she did I wanted to do. I remember I read Romeo and Juliet three times all the way through just so I could talk about the play with my sister. Because I was only in seventh grade when I read this, it challenged my reading level and knowledge of higher literature. |
