Letter Books in Kindergarten

In Mrs. Robert's Kindergarten class, we would do a different letter books every week.  These letter books would help us identify the letter and things that start with that letter.  We would also learn how to print that letter in lower case and upper case.  This was the beginning of my written rhetorical career.

Reading License Plates

Car trips were very common in my family.  To make the car trip seem to go by quicker, our family would play the alphabet license plate game. The only object of the game was to spot the letters of the alphabet on the car's license plate as they went by.  This game was great when I was first starting to learn how to read because it was a fun way to recognize my letters.

Sweet Valley High

My Favorite Series

I think it is safe to say that I read every single book in the Sweet Valley High series.  Starting in about third grade, I was obsessed with these books.  I remember my mom would have to tare me away just to have dinner.  She never could get too mad at me though when I would ignore her calls because she always encouraged my reading.

My First Library Card

After learning how to write, I was determined to master cursive because the requirement to getting my library card was to be able to write my name in cursive.

My Chinese Obsession

For some reason, when I was in second grade, I wrote a twelve page long story about "My adventure in China", as I called it.  I don't know what started it but I started reading all the books I could about the country.  Although my mother was slightly perplexed on why her eight year old daughter was reading books on China, she encouraged my thirst for knowledge none the less.  All the reading turned into my own personal creative story about me and my friend Jenny in the city of Beijing.

The Structure of an Essay

I wrote my first five paragraph essay in Third Grade. My teacher gave us the analogy of a rainstorm to help us understand the format of a five paragraph.  The introductory paragraph is like lightening, capturing the attention of the reader.  The three body paragraphs are like rain drops falling from the first paragraph and finally the conclusion is what blossoms from the three body paragraphs.

Sentence Diagrams

In the Fourth Grade, my class had to do DD or "Daily Diagrams".  Everyday, in the beginning of class, my teacher would write a sentence on the board and we would have to diagram it.  This helped develop our understanding of sentence structure.

Typewritter

From 1867, when the typewriter was invented until the end of the 20 century when the computer became popular in the home, the typewriter was used to create documents.  My household did not own a computer until I was in 5ht grade.  I remember being so careful to type correctly using the typewriter because there were no second chances.

The Invention of the Computer

The invention of the computer revolutionized the way we see communication and accessibility of information.  The typewriter became obsolete almost overnight.  Now everyone was typing on the computer.  It was also used as a source of abundant information.  With additions such as Encarta, information was much more accessible.  When we first bought a computer, I loved looking up everything I could think of on the encyclopedia from the anatomy of a plant to the biography of Martin Luther King Jr.
